Proceed with Care
This is a deal in the Open League on 2/10/2018.
I sit South as the declarer of 4.
East plays the K when you take the A.
You cash AK and both follows.
Counting the tricks you have 5 spade, 1 heart, 1 diamond now.
How should you play the hand from here?
Hints:
If A is on side, you can establish 2 more club tricks and 1 more diamond trick from QJ.
In the club suit, you have another option to ride 10 to make a double finesse on East's J9 to bring 2 tricks.
On the other hand, you may establish 2 more diamond tricks if East has the K or the suit splits 3-3 by leading towards QJ twice.
If you try to lead a low club to K, West may either take the 1st or 2nd trick and cash another round of club.
This left you no chance to take 10 tricks before losing 4 tricks unless you can find some miracle in diamond.
You can keep all your chance by playing A and lead a diamond to Q first.
If East raises with K, you already have the diamonds to discard a club in dummy.
If West takes the trick with K, he cannot attack your club suit effectively.
You will have the chance to test the diamonds before choosing your play in club.
